StitchTip calculator
Remaining yarn calculator
Estimate usable yarn left either from a known amount used or by weighing a partial ball against its original label length and weight.
How this tool works
For a known amount, the calculator subtracts usage from the starting length. For a weighed ball, it applies the label’s length-per-weight ratio to the yarn-only weight, then separates your chosen working reserve.
Example calculation
A 400 m, 100 g skein with 37 g of yarn left contains about 148 m. Holding back 5% leaves about 140.6 m available to plan with.
Frequently asked questions
Must I remove the cardboard core weight?
Yes. The scale entry should represent yarn only; a tube, cone or holder makes the remaining length look too high.
Can I use weight from a different yarn?
No. Length per gram or ounce changes by yarn construction and thickness. Use the matching label data for the yarn being weighed.
Why keep a reserve?
A small reserve covers scale precision, label tolerances, joins and an incomplete final row. Set it to zero when you need the raw estimate.
