Yarn stash sufficiency calculator

Compare matching yarn already in your stash with a project estimate plus safety allowance, then calculate complete extra skeins only when needed.

Check whether your yarn stash is enough

Length unit

How this tool works

The calculator adds the chosen safety percentage to the base requirement, compares that total with available yarn and rounds any shortfall up using the entered length per extra skein.

01

Example calculation

A project needing 800 m plus 10% safety needs 880 m. With 700 m available and 200 m per skein, the stash is 180 m short, so one extra skein leaves about 20 m.

Frequently asked questions

Should different colours be combined?

Only if the pattern lets them substitute for each other. Otherwise run one check per colour.

Does the safety allowance replace a dye-lot check?

No. It protects quantity, not colour matching. Buy the needed yarn from a matching dye lot where possible.

What length should I enter for an extra skein?

Use the length printed on the exact yarn label, not only its weight category.
