How to estimate blanket yarn

The calculator compares the area of your finished blanket with the area of your sample, scales the measured sample yarn, then adds your chosen safety margin. Borders and joining yarn should be included in the margin or measured separately.

Blanket yarn example

A 10 × 10 cm sample uses 12 meters. A 140 × 200 cm blanket has 280 times the sample area, giving a base estimate of 3,360 meters before the safety margin.

Frequently asked questions

Why use a sample instead of a yarn chart?

Your own sample reflects the actual yarn, hook, stitch and tension you will use, so it is more relevant than a broad average.

Does the estimate include a border?

Only if the sample represents the border too. Otherwise, allow extra yarn through the safety margin or calculate the border separately.
