Plan the number and orientation of granny squares needed for a blanket, panel or other rectangular layout.
How the granny square layout works
Target width and height are divided by the blocked motif dimensions. For rectangular motifs, both orientations are compared; the recommendation minimizes square count first and excess size second.
Granny square example
A 8 × 12 cm motif for a 35 × 24 cm panel needs 9 motifs when rotated, instead of 10 in the measured orientation.

Measure a joined sample when seams add noticeable width, or include the expected joining allowance in each motif dimension.
