StitchTip calculator
Turning chain calculator
Choose a crochet stitch and edge convention to calculate the turning-chain height, complete foundation chain and exact first-stitch placement.
How this tool works
Each stitch family uses a standard chain height. The calculator adds that height to the requested row count and removes one only when the turning chain represents the first stitch, then keeps the same convention at both row edges.
Example calculation
For 100 double crochet stitches with chain 3 counting as the first stitch, make 102 foundation chains, work into the fourth chain from the hook and finish later rows in the top of the turning chain.
Frequently asked questions
Why can two patterns use different turning chains?
Designers may use shorter chains, loose chains or chainless standing stitches to control edge height. The pattern instruction takes priority; the calculator documents the standard convention you select.
What changes when the chain counts as a stitch?
It replaces the first stitch, so you skip the first base stitch and work the last stitch into the turning-chain top. If it is height only, work into the first base stitch and ignore the chain at the opposite edge.
Does the foundation total include the turning chains?
Yes. The displayed foundation total is the complete number to make before the first row for the selected convention.
